If you’ve ever walked the waterfront in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, you know the Moran tugboats. Deep red hulls, weathered and powerful, moored at their dock between runs guiding massive vessels in and out of port — they’re one of the most recognizable sights in the city. Emily Kalina painted them for her father-in-law, who grew up in Portsmouth, and in doing so discovered a new voice: loose, expressive, and entirely her own.

Tugs is one of Emily’s most popular and most personal paintings. The style is boldly impressionistic — gestural brushwork, deep reds against moody grey-green buildings, the harbor rendered in broad, confident strokes that somehow capture the scene more truthfully than any photograph. It’s the kind of painting where you instantly recognize the place even through the abstraction. Locals stop in their tracks. Visitors feel like they’ve been there before.

This is a canvas print that doesn’t just decorate a wall — it brings a whole mood into a room. The moody, expressive energy of the Portsmouth waterfront, the deep reds, the industrial poetry of working tugboats. Printed on premium matte stretched canvas with a 1.25” gallery-wrapped profile, ready to hang and immediately at home above a sofa, in a study, or anywhere that calls for something with real character.
