Commercial Alley is one of the most charming corners of downtown Portsmouth, NH — and one of my favorite subjects to paint. This beautiful little alley feels like a living piece of history: warm brick buildings, cobblestone underfoot, and old hand-lettered signs hanging from hooks above the shop doorways. What makes it truly special is the contrast — that vivid, startling blue sky above and the soft framing of trees that line the alley. Portsmouth was founded in the 1600s, and looking down this alley, you feel it. It's old-world charm at its most effortless.
